When MTH started making reproductions of the 400E, they took things a step further. Instead of only making reproductions of Lionel issues (black, gray and blue comet colors), they decided to add various roadnames and use new paint schemes. Now you find 400Es painted in Lehigh Valley, Chessie System, Southern Pacific, Great Northern, Southern, Denver Rio Grande, B&O, New York Central, John Deere, Harley Davidson, Christmas, Caterpillar, and Circus schemes among others. In 2004, they released a purple 400E to lead the standard gauge freight cars offered as part of their tinplate collector's club. In the next catalog they released purple versions of the "Blue Comet" passenger set to offer a passenger option to the purple 400E. This has affectionately been called the "Purple Comet" and is quite striking - and is awfully tough to find too!
